Open source licenses are the connective tissue that holds together the open source movement, but the technical details and legal jargon of individual licenses can be confusing. How do you know what you can use and how you can use it? Simply put, licenses are a way of communicating with the open-source community. Led by presenters with expertise in copyright and licensing, digital technologies, and scholarly communication, this session will introduce the most commonly-used open licenses, describe what they do and how they overlap, and offer guidance for choosing and remixing applicable licenses for your work. By the end of the session, participants will be able to bravely face open licenses and use open licenses to engage in conversation with other members of the open community. If you’ve never heard the term “indemnification” before, then this session is for you.
