In 1987, Dr. Fred Brooks published a now famous paper called “No Silver Bullet — Essence and Accidents of Software Engineering” which argued that writing software has inherently complexity that no new technology or process can overcome, thus we cannot achieve the elimination of bugs or an order of magnitude increase in the speed in which new, complex software can be developed. Yet the DevOps process claims to release software multiple times per day. Has the DevOps methodology found the “Silver Bullet”? We will explore how modern, containerized, cloud based software development is a new paradigm and answer the question: “Where did the complexity go?”
